Respite in Ireland

This chapter is rated Yellow Star for descriptions of violence.

Preface: I honestly never expected to find myself writing fan fiction. Truthfully, I didn’t even know the genre existed (or at least I had never delved into it) until a conversation with my daughters in April 2012, shortly after reading the Hunger Games trilogy and watching the first film. Wow, did that chat ever open up a whole new world for me, landing eventually at Jixemitri. I became an obsessed lurker, constantly peering into the author’s websites and prowling the Sun and the message board daily hoping for new tidbits to devour. After that, I wanted to be able to interact and post comments and moved into membership. Last year was my first JixeWriMo and I managed to complete a halfmarathon’s worth of words in that month of writing. I also found that I had snippets of Trixie conversations and happenings bouncing in and out of my conscious thought and have since been toying with the idea of setting up my own website and posting more than just the occasional snippet at Jix.
Last year’s JixeWriMo featured some amazing prompts and Jenni (The Reluctant Monkey) posted an absolutely incredible story about Dan and Trixie and an abandoned hotel … “Raven’s Hollow,” – which was AWESOME!! – But I digress: Her story started me on this spiral of thinking about Dan, and his lack of family, which also means a lack of family history. In a crazy bout of free-thinking, I went from remembering the shoemaker rhyme (Black Jacket) to Dan’s Irish heritage to goofing off online where I found a County Sligo. I thought how fun it would be to send Dan to Ireland and let him discover some family history – maybe even a connection to Sarah Sligo (Whispering Witch)?
So, I mulled it over and I have wasted hours on Pinterest and Google, daydreaming and doodling, and finally I have this introductory chapter finished. It definitely hints at the potential of a Dan and Trixie relationship because … well, A) Dan is clearly hot, an B) what decent non-Belden guy wouldn’t fall in love with Trixie? But, I’ve tried not to push it too much in the opening because I’m not sure yet that Jim won’t be able to get over his stupid, stubborn self and end up coming to Ireland to apologize. I guess I’m open-minded because these wonderful characters (all of whom belong to Random House and not to me) haven’t yet told me what is going to happen during this Respite in Ireland!
